Last KL Post

eeee the next time i post will be from melbourne.

some part of me is looking forward to starting classes, buying new stationery (yes, new stationery gives me a temporary high) and seeing everyone again.

what i'm NOT looking forward to is cleaning the apartment which is bound to be all dusty and dirty after three months of non use. i HATE the creepy crawlies that always manage to get in via the vent system.

am sorta packed but sorta not? bringing a shit load of clothing back to melbourne, didn't know i did that much shopping eep. no wonder my mom couldn't stop complaining.

see you guys on the other side :)

Leaving everything behind

And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cause I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
-Better Days, Goo Goo Dolls

how do you leave something that's been a constant in your life for the past year and a half behind?

i hate picking up the pieces.

oh well. here's to a good semester 1, 2006.

Every guy is a bastard.

it just depends on which girl you ask.

Timetable is out!

Apart from the hour it took me to get everything changed to the times i wanted, i'm really happy with my timetable this semester :)

so basically my worst day is monday with 4 hours (2 tutorials and 2 lectures ugh) and 3 hours from tuesday to thursday with Friday's off :) and the language hours this sem have been reduced so i only have 4 per week (woohoo!)

sigh leaving's going to be a pinch. summer holidays were really great but i'll be back again for a week in 2 months due to a ticketing mix up.

plus i've just been approved for a history subject which i didn't have the pre requisites for so all is looking up this semester. for now anyway.

Let sleeping kitties lie...

especially if they have fungus infections. ick.

sleeping boyfriends on the other hand...

well.

u can disturb them anytime you like :P

Seperation Anxiety

It's finally kicking in. a week before i go back to Melbourne and leave everything (namely Justin and my extra comfortable bed) behind.

part of really wants to get back into uni and start soaking up information, my brain feels like it's rusting away at the edges and a tutorial/lecture is just what i need to jumpstart it.

and then of course it'll realise it doesnt really like working that much and go back into the semi comatose state that i'm usually in throughout semester.

but hey. i'll deal with that when i come to it.

summer holidays have been great :) a lot of firsts for me and Justin (ew ew ew sap!) and the summer job was interesting to say the least.

amazingly i've gone 3 whole months without a huge bust up with mum (although she has thrown the proverbial cow an amazing number of times) which is nothing short of miraculous.

i'm gonna miss being driven around, having to take public transport to uni is gonna be a bitch. will definitely be taking driving lessons when i get back again if only to improve my parking :P

will also FINALLY be in my second year of uni which means more hard work. i need a H2A average across my majoring subjects if i wanna get into honours.

aaargh :( i dont wanna leave summer holidays behind. the 3 months which i thought were gonna span ages is finally coming to an end.

nOoOoOoOooOo :(

Pride and prejudice

I’ve watched with much amusement the plight of the 11 men who were shaved bald after being caught gambling and not so much amusement at the rapidly deteriorating situation in which Muslims and certain newspapers have found themselves entangled in.

Today, the ‘Bald 11’ as they are affectionately called have decided not to file the civil suit against the police after they were promised an internal investigation by the coppers.

Call me cynical, but does anybody else think that the investigations are not going to come up with a favourable conclusion?

Anyway, I was talking to mum about it and told her that I didn’t particularly see the huge deal in having their heads shaved. After all, hair grows back right?

She promptly proceeded to scold me, telling me that it was a matter of pride in ones self that set off the outraged reaction. It wasn’t about whether hair was going to grow back or not.

To quote a certain friend of mine, this to me was ‘ponderance material’.

The Malaysian law states that when people are detained, the police have the right to ‘potong pendek pendek’ their hair. And that’s where I think they hit a snag.

The law seems pretty open to interpretation from where I sit. I’m going to take the stance of a bimbotic blonde on this one and say that potonging someone’s hair pendek pendek could very well be equivalent to shaving one’s head bald but leaving stubble behind.

I do not deny that it would have been an extremely humiliating situation to be in. If someone had tried to potong my hair pendek pendek I’d probably threaten the person with every known form of torture available from boiling pitch to defenestration (too much Eddings, sorry).

What I’m wondering now, is how the police really got these men to drop the charges (again with the cynicism).

By some wild stretch of imagination, I’m thinking of money changing hands and maybe some ‘persuasive’ arguments put forth by the coppers.

...

But of course, Malaysia is a lovely country and we need to keep up that image so I’m certain the above said NEVER happened.

The other thing that has caught my attention in the news would be the images of burning Danish embassies that seem to be flourishing in the news lately.

Racial prejudice? Freedom of the press? Respect of other cultures?

For those of you not acquainted with the story, the whole thing started when the Danish newspapers decided it would be in their rights as press to publish certain cartoons of a controversial nature, one featuring Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb as a turban.

I have always been of the opinion (I’m sure I’m generalising here) that most Westerners are not sensitive enough of other cultures. Add in eons of enmity between the West and the Muslims and we have a rather large bomb just waiting to explode.

While I’m not condoning the acts of destruction, there is a limit to everything, even the freedom of press (which I think is a flimsy excuse for racial prejudice).

The situation has reached Malaysia, the Sarawak Tribune has been shut down because they published the offensive cartoons. I mean, how smart was that? You live in a Muslim country and you publish cartoons that have effectively insulted the Muslim population of the world)

Violence and immaturity (Muslim newspapers want to publish caricatures of the Holocaust in retaliation) are not the answer.

I do not pretend that something as simple as an apology from the ever-pompous Westerners will resolve the issue but I’m sure that it will mollify the other party somewhat.

I have seen chatrooms with the ever-repeated message of ‘Fuck Islam’. I want to know how that helps the situation. It’s not even imaginative in any sense. Just because you don’t like a religion, it does not mean you get to disrespect it.

Everyone needs a large healthy dose of ‘Grow the hell up’. And that’s all I’m going to say on both matters.

Affirmation

is a wonderful thing.

i'm actually almost 100% sure that the change from Science to Arts was the right thing to do now.
on a side note, i have Messenger Beta invites. who wants?

Eww much?

Valentine's Day has become this extremely cloying holiday. the things i see on sale now make me want to yak.

whatever happened to TASTEFUL and not overdone bouquets of roses?

i mean seriously, who aside from 13-18 year old boys will buy things like these? (and only just cause their girlfriends WILL compare with their friends the amount each of their boyfriends spent on them for Valentine's Day)

WHO PAYS 750 BUCKS FOR A BOUQUET OF ROSES THAT"S GOING TO DIE??

give ME the cash!!! i'll buy a really nice pair of shoes. or bettina liano jeans. i'm not fussy.

and goodness. 310 dollars for an ugly teddy bear and roseS?

no thank you. 310 dollars will enable me a hair cut and dye and quite possibly even highlights.
valentine's day is becoming increasingly commercialised (my, dont i sound like a bitter hag). it's just my bad luck i have to write an article on the shops selling v'day stuff. pah.

Work on a weekend?

i really should learn to not answer office phone calls over the weekend.

i thought it was brian calling about my monday article, but turned out to be phui yee instead.

finally joined the r.age team on friday, will be working with them for a total of one week (count it folks, ONE week) and i'm already swamped with work.

i have to say it's looking like it's going to be a fun experience really, niki and phui yee have been nice so far and i've already written in an assignment which constituted running around making phone calls.

but anyway.

they want me to write about my intern experience at the Star which shouldn't be a problem. i have oodles of intern experience but i doubt the public would really wanna hear about what goes on in the Star office.

the politics, the backstabbing, the bitching.

oh yeah. this'll make for a really good article alright.

now which matters more to me? getting the truth out there? or getting a good recommendation from the Star.

hmmm.

yaaaaaaaaaay!

i love my boyfriend cause he's incredibly sweet :)

headache.

bed now.

eep

there's nothing scarier than a six year old boy running around MPH singing Lindsay Lohan on top of his lungs.

kids these days sure mature faster than we did.
